Ebony and Ivory

Ok, so this isn't sports related but both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson, icons in their own ways, died today. Fawcett burst onto the scene with Charlie's Angels and the famous POSTER. Mildly talented and with a screwed up personal life, she nevertheless remained a recognizable public figure. And as for Michael Jackson, well I can't think of a sadder case. Ruined at a really young age by his whack-job father, he was an immensely talented but deeply troubled man. R.I.P., Farrah and Michael.

  1. lsquared, great post. No one was stranger than MJ but he belongs with Sinatra, Elvis, and the Beatles in the pop music world of genius.

I always thought Farrah was over rated, but Mike Parham claimed to have gone out with her while he as a student at UT.

And one the other recent death: Ed McMahon. I just knew he would show up one day at my door and give me millions. Still waiting.

  2. Hang in there SB I don't think they are done with his estate.

  3. I can only hope that everyone will take it upon themselves to ensure that Michael Jackson's music and talent are what prevail and his whackitude is just a footnote, rather than the other way around. RIP to both (or all three, forgot about old Ed there). Don't hold out for those millions - he was on the brink of foreclosure so I'm thinking his estate ain't so flush

  4. Yes, but the millions that Ed was giving away weren't his own. No worries, sbaskind. Publishers' Clearinghouse will no doubt get another spokesman. My nominee: Pee Wee Herman.

  5. The news about MJ was truly sad. I remember my first year in college - playing "I Want You Back", ABC - and all those on the Jackson 5's first album, dancing down the hall of the dorm at Tech. Teaching the OHS boy's basketball team aerobics to "Bad", "Thriller" etc. Then at the REC center the other night, plogging along on the treadmill (a 57 year old among young, nubile coeds)forgetting about the time, level, and cardio - and walking as fast as my fat ass can go - to at least 7 of his most famous videos. I'm with Lonek8 - I hope he is remembered for his innovation and making all of our bodies want to get up and dance at some (or several) times in our lives.
